Patient talking to dentist about their dental implant

To patients, it can sometimes seem like their dentist is speaking a different language when it comes to explaining treatment. From long, complicated words like “osseointegration” to strange, technical terms like “abutment,” the vocabulary can feel almost alien. But there’s no need to worry, with this blog, you’ll be decoding dental implant jargon in no time! Continue reading to find a quick guide to the six most-searched implant terms.

1: Implant Fixture

The star of the show, an implant “fixture,” is a small, screw-like post (usually made of titanium or zirconia) that’s surgically placed into your jawbone. This replaces the root of a missing tooth and, over time, bonds with the bone tissue to become a sturdy anchor point for your new restoration.

2: Abutment

This is the connector piece that sits on top of the implant fixture and holds the crown (the visible tooth) in place. Think of it as the “glue” between the implant and your restoration, keeping the prosthetic from moving around as you chew.

3: Restoration

A restoration refers to the visible, tooth-shaped part of your implant that sits on top of the abutment (or multiple abutments, depending on the type). It could be a crown, a bridge, or even dentures.

Regardless, each is designed to match the shape and color of the other natural teeth surrounding the prosthetic, giving your smile a seamless look.

4: Osseointegration

This word may sound complicated, but it’s crucial to implant success. Osseointegration is the process where your jawbone fuses with the implant fixture. This natural bond is what makes dental implants so strong and long-lasting.

5: Bone Graft

If your jawbone isn’t dense enough to support an implant, your dentist may recommend a bone graft. This procedure adds bone material (usually donated from your chin or tibia) to the implant site to create a solid foundation for the fixture. It’s more common than you’d think and helps ensure long-term success.

6: Healing Cap (or Cover Screw)

After the implant is placed, a metal cap is often placed over it to protect it during the healing process. This also helps shape the gum tissue, so it fits nicely around your final restoration.

Understanding these common dental implant terms can take a lot of stress and mystery out of the process. Whether you’re exploring your options or have already scheduled a consultation, a little foreknowledge goes a long way in helping you feel confident about your procedure.
