What are Veneers?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Often referred to as \u201cinstant orthodontics,\u201d veneers are thin porcelain shells that fit over your existing teeth to make them appear whiter and brighter. They can improve a variety of issues, including minor spacing problems, gaps, and even the size and shape of your teeth. They\u2019re also stain-resistant, so they\u2019ll remain looking great for up to 20 years with proper oral hygiene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Happens During Veneer Treatment?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

To get veneers, your dentist will first numb your mouth, as he or she will need to remove a very small amount of enamel from each tooth prior to treatment. This is so that the veneers don\u2019t make your teeth too bulky and cause problems with your speech. Because of this step, veneer treatment is considered irreversible, and thus treated teeth will always need either a veneer or a dental crown going forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once your teeth have been reshaped, your dentist will take impressions of them for the new prosthetics. Then, you\u2019ll be given temporary veneers to protect them until the permanent ones arrive from the dental lab. While wearing these, you may feel some tooth sensitivity, but this is temporary and usually goes away as soon as the final restorations are attached.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In about two weeks you\u2019ll return to the dentist and have your temporary veneers removed and your permanent restorations attached. This process should not hurt, and because your teeth were reshaped, you should not notice or feel anything sticking out from teeth once they\u2019ve been attached.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Do Veneers Feel Like?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Once your permanent veneers are placed, they should feel like your natural teeth but look much better! Veneers should not hurt, but you still may experience some sensitivity for a few days after they\u2019re applied. If this does not go away, reach out to your dentist for assistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another side-effect new veneer patients have reported is a slight speech impediment that goes away after a few weeks. You can greatly reduce the time it takes to clear up by practicing speaking out loud. If it still doesn’t go away within a few weeks, contact your dentist as they may be able to remove some of the veneer material on certain teeth, making it easier for the mouth to adjust to the new additions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Remember, veneers are a fast and effective way to change the appearance of your smile.
